A report in The Sunday Times has revealed that a highly poisonous metal called cadmium has been found in some cheap silver jewelery being sold on Amazon and TikTok shops. This metal can cause cancer, kidney disease and bone damage. In fact, just a few days ago, the jewelery purchased for testing was got tested at the Birmingham Assay Office, where the purity of precious metals is tested. What came to light in the investigation?
This investigation has revealed that a ring being sold on Amazon for 2.99 pounds (about Rs 387) was said to be 925 sterling silver. But investigation revealed that it contained 92.3 percent cadmium, whereas it should have contained at least 92.5 percent pure silver. This quantity was 9 thousand times more than the legal limit fixed in Britain.
Similarly, thousands of times more quantity of cadmium was found in some charms and earrings being sold as 999 silver and Tibetan silver. At the same time, 33 percent cadmium was found in the charms of a bracelet sold as 925 silver on TikTok shop, which was about 3300 times more than the legal limit.
How dangerous is cadmium?
Let us tell you that cadmium is a poisonous metal, which is generally used in making rechargeable batteries and industrial goods. It gradually accumulates in the body and can damage the kidneys, weaken bones and also increase the risk of cancer.

Companies presented clarification
After this investigation report came out, Amazon said that it takes customer security seriously and such products are being removed after internal investigation. At the same time, TikTok Shop has banned the seller concerned and has also issued a product recall for customers who bought poisonous bracelets.
