Sawan Shivratri 2026 Date: The second month of Chaturmas is called Sawan. Sawan will start from 30th July 2026. Markandeya Rishi pleased Lord Shiva by performing rigorous penance in the month of Shravan itself, it is said that due to which even the god of death i.e. Yamraj, the god of time, bowed down.

It is believed that every year in Sawan, Lord Shiva comes to his in-laws’ house. Shiva Sadhana done in this month helps in getting relief from the troubles of Yama. Every day of Saavan is very special, but the day of Saavan Shivratri is as fruitful as Mahashivratri. Sawan Shivratri is on 11 August 2026. On this day, the virtue of doing Shiva Sadhana, Jalabhishek etc. in the night time is obtained throughout the year.

Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Sawan month will start at 4.54 am on 11th August and will end at 1.52 am the next day on 12th August. On this day, Kanwariyas offer water to Lord Shiva and the Kanwar Yatra ends.

Importance of Saavan in Puranas

द्वादशास्वपी मासेषु श्रावानो मेयतिवल्लभः। श्रवनारहं यन्महात्म्यं तेनासौ श्रावानो मतः। Shravanaksham Pournmasyaan Tatopi Shravan: Smrita. यस्य श्रवानमात्रेन सिद्धिदः श्रावानोऽप्यतः।

Lord Shiva says that, among all the months, I love Shravan very much, its glory is worth listening to. That is why it is called Shravan. In this month, Shravan Nakshatra occurs on the full moon, hence it is also called Shravan. Achievement is achieved only by listening to the glories of this month, that is why it is called Shravan.

What things should be worshiped on Sawan Shivratri?

  • Milk and water- It is very auspicious to offer raw milk and Ganga water on Shivalinga. This purifies both body and mind.
  • Honey- Lord Shiva does not like sweets but using honey in Rudrabhishek brings sweetness to speech and relationships.
  • Rice (Akshat) – Unbroken white rice has special importance in Shiva worship.
  • Bilva Patra- Bilva Patra is very dear to Lord Shiva. Be sure to offer Bilva Patra with three leaves.
  • White flowers- Lord Shiva especially likes white colored flowers, like Kaner or Aak flower.
  • Ghee and curd- These are used in Panchamrit. It is considered very sacred for Rudrabhishek on Shivalinga.
  • Fruits and dry fruits – especially coconut, raisins and dates can be offered to God.
  • Jaggery- Jaggery or dishes made from jaggery can also be offered to Lord Shiva.
  • Panchamrit- Panchamrit prepared by mixing milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar holds a special place in Shiva worship.
