Why did gas cylinder prices increase?

India imports more than 60% of its LPG requirement from other countries. In such a situation, movements in the global markets have a direct and immediate impact on the prices of petrol and diesel in the country. The import cost of LPG in India is determined by the global benchmark ‘Saudi Aramco Contract Price’.

Due to the ongoing crisis in West Asia, this global benchmark has increased by about 46% since February. On top of that, due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the supply chain has also been badly affected. This is the reason why the import of gas in India decreased to only 6.96 lakh tonnes in the month of April, which is usually around Rs 20 lakh per tonne per month.

By when can prices decrease?

Despite the decline in international crude oil prices, there will be no immediate fall in LPG prices. This may take at least 3-6 months.

According to the current international prices, the actual cost of a cylinder is around Rs 1600, but the price of a domestic gas cylinder in Delhi is Rs 942. That means the oil companies themselves are bearing the difference in prices.

Due to this difference, oil companies are expected to suffer a total loss of up to Rs 60,000 crore in the current financial year. Unless the level of this loss reduces and the Saudi contract price (Saudi CP) also comes down, the companies will not be in a position to reduce the prices.

LPG Rate Today on June 20: Today, on Saturday, June 20, the price of 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder is Rs 942 in different cities of the country. In the month of June, its price was increased by Rs 29 per cylinder. Similarly, the price of 19 kg commercial cylinder used in hotels, restaurants and dhabas was also increased from Rs 42 to Rs 53.50 this month. Earlier in May, a historic increase of Rs 993 had been made in the prices. With this, its price in Delhi has now reached Rs 3113.50 per cylinder.

Supply continues despite tension

Meanwhile, according to an update released by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Thursday, about 1.47 crore domestic LPG cylinders were delivered in the last three days, while new bookings for about 1.36 crore cylinders were made during the same period. Despite disruptions in the supply chain due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, normal supply of cooking gas to households across the country continues.

Effect of war in Iran on LPG prices

According to data from the Oil Ministry’s Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC), LPG consumption has declined by 20% to 2.13 million tonnes this year. It is noteworthy that 90% of the LPG supply in India comes from imports, which is mostly sourced from the Middle East.

Cheapest LPG in India

Recently, despite increasing the prices of 14.2-kg LPG cylinders for the second time in June, the central government claimed that cooking gas prices in India are the lowest in the world. The government said in a statement that due to the rise in international prices after the war, the cost of supply of domestic LPG cylinder has increased to more than Rs 1600.

The government also said that before the recent change in prices, OMCs were incurring a loss of about Rs 703 on selling every LPG cylinder. According to Praveen Mal Khanuja, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the government is giving a subsidy of about Rs 700 to non-Ujjwala customers and Rs 1000 to Ujjwala beneficiaries. He stressed that based on the Saudi Contract Price (CP), the actual cost of a 14.2 kg cylinder is more than Rs 1600, but customers pay Rs 942.

Calling the recent change in prices a “very minor increase” compared to the loss (under-recovery) of Rs 700, Khanuja said the increase of Rs 29 means Rs 1 per day and for a family that uses 12 cylinders in a year, the expenditure is ’20 paise per day per family member’. The cost of LPG import in India is linked to Saudi CP, which is the global benchmark for this fuel. According to PTI report, this benchmark has increased by about 46% after the war affected the supply from the Strait of Hormuz.
