India had to face defeat in the match played against South Africa on 1 June. After this result, the equation of the points table of Group-1 has completely changed. The format of the tournament is such that even a defeat can give a big blow to any team’s semi-final hopes. Something similar seems to be happening with India at present. The Indian team is part of Group-1 in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. Australia has captured the top position by winning its first three matches. Whereas India has secured the second position by winning two out of three matches. South Africa and Bangladesh also have the same points, but due to better net run rate the African team is in third place. Pakistan and Netherlands are almost out of the tournament after three consecutive defeats.
Why increased concern for India?
India’s difficulties have increased because now it faces the challenge of teams like Bangladesh and Australia. According to ICC rules, only two teams from each group will reach the knockout stage. If India loses against Australia, it will be left with only 6 points and the path to the semi-finals may be difficult. On the other hand, South Africa’s remaining matches are against Bangladesh and Netherlands. On paper, both these matches are considered relatively easy for the African team. If South Africa wins both the matches, it will have 8 points and will become a strong contender for a place in the semi-finals. However, the equations are not completely against India yet. If Australia loses against Pakistan and India in its next matches, then the group picture may change again and many teams may come into the race for qualification.
