Suryakumar Yadav, who led the Indian cricket team to win the 2026 T20 World Cup title under his captaincy, has been dropped from Team India. BCCI on Saturday also announced Team India for the series against Ireland, England and the Asian Games. Suryakumar’s name was not visible far and wide in these three squads.
Captaincy has been snatched from Suryakumar Yadav and he is permanently out of the team. Shreyas Iyer has become the new captain of the T20 team. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar also cited poor form as the main reason for Surya’s drop. Tilak Verma has become the vice-captain and 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi has also been selected in Team India for the first time.
This decision was not easy
Team India’s Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar said about Suryakumar Yadav – This decision was not easy, especially when we have just won the World Cup. But after every World Cup you think about further strategies and what could be the best decision. Keeping the next World Cup in mind, we felt that this would be the right decision.
The last 2 years have not been good at all for Suryakumar Yadav in terms of personal form. In the T20 World Cup 2026, he scored 242 runs in 9 matches. Only one half-century came from his bat in the entire World Cup. Before that, the New Zealand series was good for him, but before that he had also flopped in the series against Australia, South Africa and England.
