To promote higher education and research in the country, the Central Government and various government institutions provide scholarship and fellowship schemes to students pursuing PhD. Under these schemes, financial assistance ranging from Rs 37,000 to Rs 1 lakh or more is given to researchers every month. Besides, research grants and other facilities are also provided in many schemes.
Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF) is mainly for students pursuing PhD in IIT, IISc, IISER and other top institutes. Under this scheme, research scholars get fellowship up to Rs 70,000 per month for the first two years, Rs 75,000 per month for the third year and Rs 80,000 per month for the fourth and fifth years. Apart from this, a total research grant of up to Rs 10 lakh is also given in five years.
UGC-NET and CSIR-NET JRF
The most popular means of PhD funding in the country is UGC-NET and CSIR-NET Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). This fellowship is given to students of science, humanities, social sciences and other subjects. Students who qualify NET-JRF are given a monthly stipend during their research work. The duration of the fellowship is usually five years, with JRF in the initial years and SRF (Senior Research Fellowship) in the later years.
DST INSPIRE Fellowship
INSPIRE Fellowship, run by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), is for students who have excelled in science subjects and want to pursue a career in research. This fellowship provides financial assistance to researchers in basic and applied sciences. Its objective is to attract talented students towards scientific research.

AICTE Doctoral Fellowship
AICTE Doctoral Fellowship (ADF) is an important scheme for students pursuing PhD in engineering and technical subjects. Under this scheme, fellowship ranging from Rs 37,000 to Rs 42,000 per month is provided to the selected researchers. This scheme provides financial support to full-time PhD students during their research so that they can complete their studies and research in a better way.
Prime Minister Fellowship for industry related research
If a researcher wants to do research on industry related topics, then Prime Minister Fellowship for Doctoral Research can be a better option for him. This scheme is based on partnership between government and private industries. Under this, researchers can get much more financial assistance than JRF and SRF. In many cases the fellowship amount reaches Rs 1 lakh per month.
Special fellowship for reserved category and women
The government also runs special national fellowship schemes for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Class (OBC) students. The objective of these schemes is to encourage students from socially backward classes for higher education and research. Apart from this, schemes like UGC Post-Doctoral Fellowship for Women are also available, which can be availed by women who have completed PhD. This scheme provides assistance to women researchers to continue high level research work.
