The weather is going to worsen across the country. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), while issuing the extended range forecast from May 14 to May 27, has clearly warned that on one hand, North and West India is going to be scorched, while on the other hand, there is a possibility of heavy rains and storms in many states of the North-East and South.
According to the extended range forecast released by IMD, severe heat and heatwave conditions are being created in North-West and Central India. People of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Western-Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh will have to take special precautions. There is a possibility of severe heatwave in western Rajasthan between 17th to 19th May, while the effect of heatwave may remain in Delhi, Haryana and Punjab from 16th to 20th May.
According to the Meteorological Department, the temperature in North-West India may go above normal by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius. Recently the mercury has reached 48.3 degrees in Barmer, Rajasthan, while 46.1 degrees was recorded in Jaisalmer. It may be difficult to go out during the afternoon.
Continuation of rain and storm in Northeast and South
On the other hand, due to the effect of well-marked low pressure area and cyclonic circulation formed in the Bay of Bengal, there will be continuous rain and strong storm activities in Northeast India, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
IMD has issued an alert of heavy to very heavy rain in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Sikkim. In Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha, winds can blow at a speed of 50 to 70 kilometers per hour. There is a possibility of hailstorm in some areas. Heavy rains can lead to waterlogging, traffic jams and local floods in low-lying areas.

The Meteorological Department has also informed that the southwest monsoon may advance into parts of Andaman Sea, South Bay of Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 16. This means that preparations for the arrival of monsoon now seem to be intensifying.
Advice:
- In hot areas, avoid exposure to sunlight between 12 noon to 4 pm, drink plenty of water and take special care of children and the elderly. In rainy states, keep checking weather updates continuously, be cautious in weak houses and low-lying areas.
- Overall, this double attack of weather is going to continue on people for the next two weeks. According to IMD, changes in weather conditions are being continuously monitored by IMD.
