A unique case has come to light amid the devastation caused by 2 earthquakes in Venezuela. A 44-year-old security guard has been rescued alive after being trapped under the debris of a shopping mall for almost 7 days. On Thursday, search and rescue teams from El Salvador and Chile pulled Hernan Alberto Gil alive from the debris of the nine-story Galerias Playa Grande shopping center in the northern state of La Guaira, Reuters reported.
According to El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, the operation to rescue Gil began on Monday. He kept giving continuous updates regarding this on social media platform X. Bukele said rescue workers were delivering water and essential liquids to the security guards through tubes, but due to the structure being unstable they had to dig two separate tunnels to reach the guards safely.
He said that on Thursday morning, Gill was taken out from the debris on a stretcher and taken in an ambulance. In this way Hernan Alberto Gil was finally saved. Bukele posted on X that this rescue operation was possible only due to the combined efforts of teams from Chile, America, Portugal, Mexico, Costa Rica, Venezuela and El Salvador. These teams worked day and night to clear debris, stabilize the structure and pave the way to Hernan.
Rescue operation lasted for about 70 hours
Chile’s fire service said the rescue operation lasted about 70 hours and that Gil was in good condition after being pulled out. According to government data released on Wednesday, 8 days ago, two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 occurred at an interval of less than 1 minute, in which 2,295 people died.
Death toll crosses 10 thousand
The number of people missing after the disaster had reached about 60,000, but by Thursday morning this number had dropped to about 38,600 in a widely used online database. Cellphone service is still intermittent in La Guaira, the state worst affected by the earthquake. A UN envoy said it was ordering 10,000 body bags for Venezuela, while the US Geological Survey (USGS) estimates the total death toll could exceed 10,000.
