PLFS Report: Amidst the ongoing uncertainties at the global level, another bad news is knocking for India. One such thing has come to light in the Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) released by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI), which has increased the concern.
According to the survey, the unemployment rate among people aged 15 to 29 years has increased to 15.2 percent in the month of March. Which was 14.8 percent in February. According to statistics, this is the highest level in the last nine months. Earlier in June 2025, the youth unemployment rate was recorded at 15.3 percent.
What does the report say?
Talking about statistics, the total unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above has increased to 5.1 percent in the month of March. In February this figure was 4.9 percent. According to the ministry, the main reason for this increase has been said to be less employment opportunities in cities.
Unemployment increased in cities
Talking about youth, the unemployment rate among men aged 15-29 years reached 14.3 percent in March, which was 13.7 percent in February. Whereas among women it increased to 17.7 percent, which was earlier 17.6 percent.
Youth unemployment in rural areas stood at 13.6 percent, while in urban areas it has increased to 18.4 percent. These figures clearly show that the unemployment rate has increased in cities compared to villages.
Labor force participation declined
A decline has also been recorded in the Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) in March. This figure has fallen to 55.4 percent. Whereas in February it was 55.9 percent. A decline has also been seen in rural areas. Whereas earlier it was at 58.7 percent, now it has reached the figure of 58.
There was also a decline in the participation rate of women and it came down to 34.4 percent, which was earlier 35.3 percent. Whereas the participation rate of men declined slightly to 77.4 percent, which was 77.5 percent in February.
