Amidst rumors of a split in Mamata Banerjee’s party in Bengal, a big statement by expelled party leader Riju Dutta has come to light. He posted on social media platform X and wrote that the new TMC is taking shape. Ritabrata Banerjee has been named the leader of the opposition and Akhruzzaman the chief whip. Dutta further said, 64 TMC MLAs have declared that they ‘accept Mamata Banerjee as their leader, but not Abhishek Banerjee.’

Earlier, Ritabrata Banerjee, expelled Trinamool Congress MLA from Uluberia (East) seat of Howrah, had reached the Assembly on Wednesday to meet the Speaker. Claiming letters of support from 59 party MLAs, he said that his faction is the main opposition party in the state, while the faction loyal to Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee is now in minority.

When Ritabrata Banerjee reached the assembly premises around 10:30 in the morning, the party MLAs who had signed the new resolution started joining her one by one. On Tuesday, without saying anything directly, he had hinted at such a step after reaching the Assembly premises. During this, he also targeted Abhishek Banerjee and criticized him for demanding CAPF after the attack in Sonarpur on 30 May.

Ritabrata said, ‘What kind of public leader is he? After the party’s crushing defeat, he did not come out of the house for 26 days. Now he is demanding central forces for his security. Earlier he used to say that the public is present to protect him. Then why do they need security forces now?

He also accused Abhishek Banerjee of running Trinamool Congress in a corporate style. Ritabrata said that the party is working completely dependent on the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC).
