Weather Forecast: Meteorologists often predict heavy rains, storms, cyclones and other weather events several days before they occur. The India Meteorological Department does this work through a large network of weather radars, satellites, monitoring stations, sea-based sensors and powerful supercomputers. Using real-time information and advanced mathematical models, the India Meteorological Department can predict how weather systems will develop.
How are rains and storms predicted?
The science of weather forecasting, called meteorology, is based on physics, mathematics and continuous observation of the atmosphere. The India Meteorological Department collects billions of data points every day and uses them to produce forecasts ranging from a few hours to several days in advance.

One of the most important forecasting tools of IMD is Doppler Weather Radar. These radars can monitor clouds and weather systems within a range of about 150 to 200 kilometers. They send electromagnetic waves into the atmosphere and analyze the signals coming back from raindrops in the clouds. In this, meteorologists are able to detect the movement of clouds, intensity of rain, wind speed and direction of storm in real time.
Satellites monitor space weather
IMD depends on meteorological satellites. These satellites provide latest weather related information of the entire Indian subcontinent every 15 minutes. Satellite data includes cloud patterns, moisture in the atmosphere, sea surface temperatures and pressure systems. This information helps forecasters keep an eye on major weather systems like cyclones, monsoon activity and western disturbances.

To forecast the weather, accurate information from the ground is also required. Hundreds of automatic weather stations installed across India continuously record temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed and wind direction.

IMD releases weather balloons equipped with instruments twice every day. These measure the conditions of the atmosphere at different heights. These balloons provide important information about temperature, air pressure, humidity and wind patterns in the upper atmosphere.

Because many major weather events begin over the sea, the IMD also uses a network of marine buoys. These instruments monitor sea surface temperature, wave conditions and sea movement.
