Sanwariya Basant, a 21-year-old medical student from Kerala, was allegedly murdered in Uzbekistan. An Indian student studying with him has been arrested in this case. The family alleges that the accused student was pressurizing him to convert to religion for a long time. Sanwariya Basant was a first year student at Bukhara State Medical Institute, Uzbekistan. 22-year-old Sadrul Anam has been arrested for allegedly attacking and murdering him. The accused is said to be a resident of Malappuram district of Kerala. According to local media reports, Uzbekistan police have taken him into custody and started investigation.
After Saawariya’s mortal remains were brought to India, the post-mortem was conducted again at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital on Thursday (July 9, 2026) on the demand of his family. After this the family members performed his last rites. Based on the complaint of the victim’s father, a case of murder has been registered at Haripad Police Station in Kerala. The police are investigating the matter and are waiting for official information from the agencies of Uzbekistan.

Marks of assault were found on the body
Station House Officer of Haripad Police Station, V. Vishnu said that in the initial post-mortem report, marks of assault have been found on the body. He said that complete official information about the crime has not yet been received from the law enforcement agencies of Uzbekistan. Police are also investigating what will be the legal status of the case registered in Kerala in relation to the incident registered abroad. The family alleges that the accused Sadrul Anam was continuously pressurizing Saawariya to convert. According to the complaint, when the student protested, she was beaten and abused several times. The family also claims that many other students of the college were aware of the alleged harassment and pressure.
What did the Indian Embassy say on the matter?
The Indian Embassy in Uzbekistan has also reacted on this matter. The embassy said that it is providing all possible assistance to the victim’s family. This also included arrangements to bring the mortal remains to India. In a statement issued on the social media platform X, the Indian Embassy said that the Embassy is in touch with the family of the deceased student and is in constant coordination with the concerned authorities of Uzbekistan. According to the embassy, officials of India and Uzbekistan will remain in touch until the investigation of the case is completed. At present, the investigation of the case is going on and the reasons for the murder and the allegations made by the family can be confirmed only after the investigation.
