Due to rising prices of petrol and diesel, the demand for CNG cars is continuously increasing. Whenever a customer thinks of buying a CNG car, the first question that comes to his mind is mileage. Often people think that Maruti’s CNG cars give more mileage whereas Tata Motors’ CNG cars have less mileage.

Actually, the reason for this is not only the engine, but the priorities of both the companies are different. While Maruti’s main focus is mostly on fuel efficiency, Tata gives more importance to safety, strength and better driving experience.

What is the reason behind this?

The biggest reason for low mileage of Tata’s CNG cars is their weight. The company prepares its vehicles with strong steel body and safety standards. The strong body gives better safety to the car at the time of accident and remains stable on the road. When the weight of the vehicle increases, the engine has to work harder to run it. This has a direct impact on fuel and mileage reduces.

Engine technology is also a major reason for this difference. Most of the CNG cars of Maruti have small 1.0 liter engines, which are specially tuned to give better mileage. On the other hand, Tata usually uses 1.2 liter engine and turbo engine in some models. Bigger engines provide more power and better performance, which improves the driving experience both on the highway and in the city. However, engines with higher power usually do not provide as much fuel efficiency as smaller engines.

Does design also affect mileage?

The design of the car also affects the mileage. The design of SUVs like Tata Punch and Nexon is strong and muscular, which looks attractive. When a car moves at high speed, it requires more energy, which affects the mileage. Apart from this, many Maruti cars come with lightweight and aerodynamic design, due to which they are able to cover more distance with less fuel.

Even in the matter of CNG technology, the approach of both the companies is different. Tata’s iCNG technology has been designed keeping safety and utility in mind. It has features like twin-cylinder setup, gas leak detection, automatic gas cut-off and thermal protection. These features increase security, but they also make the system a bit complex and heavy. On the other hand, Maruti’s S-CNG technology has been based on increasing mileage and fuel efficiency for years.
