It has started with the resignation of Union Minister George Kurien and this matter will drag on for a long time. After this, it is almost certain that Ravneet Singh Bittu, Pankaj Chaudhary and Harsh Malhotra will be removed from the post of ministers. There are three big reasons behind all this happening. George Kurien’s resignation: Why and how did it begin?
George Kurien was the Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying in the Modi government and was counted among the big faces of BJP from Kerala. The biggest reason behind his resignation is that he is no longer a Rajya Sabha MP. In fact, according to the Constitution of India, any person can remain a minister for a maximum of six months without being a member of Parliament.
Since Kurien’s Rajya Sabha tenure ended and the party did not send him to the Rajya Sabha again, he had to give up his chair due to constitutional compulsion. There is no punishment or resentment, but a technical compulsion, which is now going to become a headache for other ministers also.
Ravneet Singh Bittu’s number: Same constitutional hurdle
According to sources, now the next number could be Ravneet Singh Bittu, who is currently the Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries. His story is also somewhat similar to that of Kurien. Bittu had lost from Ludhiana seat of Punjab in the last Lok Sabha elections, after which the party made him a minister by showing him the way to Rajya Sabha. But now his Rajya Sabha tenure has also ended and he has not been able to reach the House again.
In such a situation, it is almost impossible for him to continue as a minister under the same six-month rule of the Constitution. Sources say that he will also submit his resignation soon. This situation shows how weak can be the political ground of many faces who have been made ministers through Rajya Sabha after losing the elections.
Pankaj Chaudhary and Harsh Malhotra: The noose of ‘one person, one post’
Now comes the turn of those two names, whose departure is being decided for a slightly different reason – Pankaj Chaudhary and Harsh Malhotra. Both of them are currently Lok Sabha MPs and are also Ministers of State at the Centre, hence there is no problem of Parliament membership for them. But the sword hanging over them is BJP’s own internal principle – ‘One person, one post.’
There is a rule in BJP that no leader can hold a big position in both the government and the party organization simultaneously. The party has now made preparations for a large-scale reshuffle in its organization in view of the upcoming elections. In this series, Pankaj Chaudhary and Harsh Malhotra are being given very important responsibilities in the party organization.
It is possible that he will be given in-charge of the upcoming election states or some big post at the national level. As soon as he takes over any major command of the organization, he will have to step down from the post of minister. This is not a punishment, but a part of the party’s strategy in which experienced leaders are directly fielded in the election field.
Mathematics of electoral states: UP, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Gujarat
The real reason for all these resignations and changes is the assembly elections of four states Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Gujarat to be held next year i.e. in 2027. These four states are very important for BJP and the party does not want to take any risk in them. In such a situation, there are two big advantages behind the strategy of removing some faces from the government and sending them to the organization:
- The leaders who will join the organization will be able to focus with full force on election management, booth level work and selection of candidates.
- The new faces that will come in the cabinet will be brought directly from these electoral states so that social and caste equations can be smoothed out.
If sources are to be believed, there will be a new face from Brahmin, Dalit or OBC community from Uttar Pradesh. Dalit or Sikh face from Punjab, Thakur or Brahmin from Uttarakhand and Patidar or tribal community leaders from Gujarat can get a place in the cabinet. This is the reason why the departure of not only these four but also some other ministers is considered certain so that adequate space can be created for the electoral states.
So did George really start resigning?
George Kurien’s resignation is being considered as the beginning of cabinet reshuffle. A cabinet meeting has been called on 24 June 2026, after which major changes can be announced. New faces can be included in the cabinet. There will be special focus on electoral states and the principle of ‘one person, one post’ will be strictly implemented.
Experts say that this is not a common reshuffle. This is BJP’s complete preparation for the 2027 elections. The ministers who contest elections will join the organization and those who join the organization will no longer be ministers. All this is a big equation between power and organization, which the Modi government is trying to achieve before the upcoming elections.
