The long political suspense regarding the selection of the Chief Minister of Kerala has finally ended on Thursday (May 14, 2026). The Congress high command has approved the name of VD Satheesan as the Chief Minister of the state after the big victory in the Kerala Assembly elections 2026. Although, the names of AICC Organization General Secretary KC Venugopal and Congress leader Ramesh Chennithalla were also included in the race for the post of Chief Minister in the state, but finally the name of VD Satheesan was finalised.
According to sources, the Congress leadership took this decision after several rounds of discussions, feedback received from the organization and taking the opinion of alliance partners. There was a churning going on within the party for a long time regarding the post of Chief Minister, in which the names of many big leaders were in discussion. However, ultimately VD Satheesan came forward as the face with the strongest hold between the organization and the public.
How was VD Satishan approved??
Congress sources say that VD Satheesan was considered the biggest face of UDF’s victory in the 2026 assembly elections. He took command of the entire election campaign and brought the Congress-led alliance to power by adopting an aggressive strategy against the Left Front. His grassroots activism during the elections, crowd gathering at public meetings and control over the organization impressed the high command.

IUML support of
The role of alliance partner Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) was also very important in the process of Chief Minister selection. IUML openly expressed its opinion in support of VD Satheesan and advocated for him to be made the Chief Minister. It is believed that this also increased the pressure on the Congress leadership to maintain political balance.
Priority to public feedback
On the other hand, a large section within the party was also active in support of KC Venugopal. According to sources, many MLAs and organization leaders were considering Venugopal as a better choice for the post of Chief Minister. Despite this, the Congress high command gave priority to the feedback received from the public and the organization.

After this the leadership took the final consensus on his name. Meanwhile, sources are also telling that amid speculations of displeasure, Rahul Gandhi called Venugopal to his residence on Thursday morning (May 14, 2026). Priyanka Gandhi was also present in this meeting. It is being told that the party leadership discussed in detail about maintaining organizational balance and future strategy.
