A big news has come out from the central political corridor of the country. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned from his post amid examination rigging and nationwide protests. After his resignation, on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the President has given additional charge of the country’s Education Ministry to Union Minister Pralhad Joshi. However, even after assuming the additional responsibility of such a big ministry, Pralhad Joshi’s salary will not increase even by a single rupee.

How much salary does a cabinet minister get?

The salary and allowances of any Union Cabinet Minister in India are decided under the ‘Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act’. A Union Minister gets a basic salary of Rs 1,00,000 per month. In addition, he is given a constituency allowance of Rs 70,000 per month for looking after his parliamentary constituency and an office allowance of Rs 60,000 per month for office expenses. A daily allowance of Rs 2,000 is also available for attending Parliament sessions or meetings. Including all these allowances, the total estimated monthly salary of a Union Minister is approximately between Rs 2.30 lakh to Rs 2.50 lakh. Apart from the salary, they are also provided a government bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi, car, driver, free travel ticket and free medical facilities.

Why will the salary not increase even after getting a new ministry?

The principle of ‘office of profit’ is strictly followed under the Indian Constitution and parliamentary rules. According to this, any MP or minister is entitled to the salary of only one post. Whether a minister has responsibility for only one department or four departments, the salary he gets will remain the same as that of a cabinet minister. The charge of any additional ministry is considered ‘additional charge’, for which there is no provision for giving any separate additional salary, allowance or bonus.
