Can IUI Help You Get Pregnant: If you and your partner have been struggling for pregnancy for a long time, then you must have heard about IUI and IVF. Both of these are fertility treatments, but there is a big difference between the two in terms of process, cost and success rate. It is important to understand both of these to take the right decision. Let us tell you what are the reasons why IUI fails.
What is IUI?
IUI i.e. Intrauterine Insemination is commonly called Artificial Insemination. It is considered to be an easier and less invasive treatment than IVF. In this process, the processed sperm is inserted directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation, so that the chances of sperm and egg meeting can be increased. The growth of eggs is monitored from the beginning of the woman’s menstrual cycle. IUI is done as soon as ovulation approaches. After washing the sperm sample in the lab, the most healthy and active sperm are selected and inserted into the uterus with the help of a thin catheter. After this, fertilization occurs naturally in the fallopian tube.
For whom is IUI recommended?
IUI is generally considered the first step in fertility treatment. It may be suitable for women who have ovulation disorders like PCOS. In cases where male factor infertility is mild, there is a problem related to cervical mucus, there is unexplained infertility or there is a single woman who is using donor sperm. Usually doctors recommend IVF after trying 3 to 4 IUI cycles.
IUI and IVF cost in India
The cost of IUI in India is much less than IVF. According to AsianInfertility report, the average cost of an IUI cycle is around Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000. This includes medicines, monitoring, sperm processing and procedures. Talking about IVF, its process is more difficult, hence the cost is also higher. The cost of an IVF cycle in India can usually range from Rs 80,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh. This includes egg extraction, fertilization in the lab, embryo transfer and other tests.
Success rate of IUI and IVF
The success rate of IUI is lower compared to IVF, but IUI is considered a better option in mild fertility problems. The success of IUI depends on age, medications and medical conditions. The success rate of IUI is about 10 to 20 percent per cycle. Whereas after 3 to 4 cycles the overall success in girls can reach 40 to 50 percent. The success rate of IVF can be up to 40 percent if the age of women is less than 35 years. This rate decreases with increasing age, but the probability of success increases with multiple cycles and embryo selection.
5 big reasons for IUI failure
According to Novaivfertility, IUI is cheap and easy, but some mistakes can affect its success.
- Poor quality eggs – Such eggs may have chromosomal problems, which affects fertilization or embryo development.
- Increasing age – IUI success is higher in those under the age of 35, after which the chances decrease rapidly. IUI is not considered effective after 40 years.
- Poor sperm quality – Weak or less active sperm are unable to reach the fallopian tube.
- Wrong timing – If sperm is not present within 12–24 hours of ovulation, the egg may be destroyed.
- Problem of endometrial lining – If the lining of the uterus is not correct, then the fertilized egg cannot implant.
