French President Emmanuel Macron responded to US President Donald Trump’s threat to buy possession of Greenland from the World Economic Forum. He termed the idea of responding to threats with the same aggression as ‘madness’ and rejected the urge to promote ‘new colonialism’. Macron said that no country can attack the sovereignty of another country and the European Union should unite and oppose it.
On Tuesday itself, Trump had leaked personal messages criticizing Macron through Truth Post. The dispute is raising tensions in Europe-US relations, including over tariffs, Greenland’s security and international regulations.
Macron said that I have to say with great sadness that we must respond to unnecessary aggression. It is ‘madness’ to even think that the EU will have to respond to the ‘unnecessary aggression’ of US tariff threats. In a question-and-answer session, Macron talked about the need to pursue Europe’s simplification agenda. He also talked about other important issues like Ukraine.
He said it would not make sense to “impose tariffs and remain divided among allies and now threaten additional tariffs.” To think that the EU could use its anti-coercion instrument on its ally America is madness. I regret it, but it is simply the result of unexpected and unwarranted aggression.
Rejecting ‘new imperialism or colonialism’, Macron said, ‘One should not waste time on strange ideas. There should be no Pandora’s box (doing something that may cause unexpected problems) or new topics. This is not the time for new imperialism or colonialism. This is the time to move forward with positive thinking towards growth, peace and climate.
Earlier, he stressed the importance of Europe, saying that perhaps it (Europe) is ‘sometimes… very slow and there is certainly room for improvement, but it is reliable, loyal and here you know the rules of the game are the rules of the game and so it remains a good place for today and tomorrow.
He said that to correct the global imbalance, Europe needs to be much stronger and self-reliant.
