US President Donald Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday (January 22, 2026) after his address at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Both the leaders discussed stopping the war between Russia and Ukraine. Zelensky has announced that Ukraine, Russia and the US will hold their first trilateral meeting in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday (January 23).
Meeting with Zelensky was good: Trump
US President Trump said he had a good meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his message to Russian President Vladimir Putin is that the war must end. Before returning home after attending the annual conference of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Trump, while answering media questions, said that the US delegation will meet Putin today or tomorrow.
He said, ‘I met President Zelensky here. The meeting went well. We (the US delegation) will meet President Putin today or tomorrow.” Later, Zelensky said his conversation with Trump was positive. After his special address at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, Zelensky said, ‘The meeting was good and it was in the interest of our country.’
He said, ‘Like any President, I have to protect the interests of my country and such meetings are usually difficult, but yes, today’s meeting was positive.’ Zelensky said that in addition to the meeting with Putin, the US delegation will also meet the Ukrainian team separately and later a trilateral meeting between the US, Russian and Ukrainian teams is expected in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Putin must end the war: Trump
When the US President was asked what his message was to Putin, he said, ‘The war has to end. Many people have died. He said, ‘About 30,000 people were killed last month, mostly soldiers. This is truly a war that must end. Emphasizing the need to end the war, Trump said, ‘We have to do it. It would be a shame if we don’t accomplish this.
Russia can go close to Trump
The US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff was expected to visit Moscow on Thursday to meet Putin and discuss plans to end the war. Trump, while addressing the WEF annual meeting on Wednesday, claimed that he was very close to an agreement to stop the Russia-Ukraine war. Although he had earlier thought that it would be easy for him to reach an agreement on this within a few hours.
Trump is trying to get Zelensky and Putin to agree on the terms to end the four-year-long war. He said that Putin and Zelensky would be ‘idiots’ if they did not end this war now, and he knows they are not. Trump mentioned that he is an expert in resolving wars, although this work should be done by the United Nations.
Hatred between Putin-Zelensky is not a good thing: Trump
He said, ‘The war has to be stopped. This will save many lives, lakhs of lives will be saved. So much hatred between Ukraine and Russia, between President Zelensky and President Putin is not a good thing. This is not good for agreements.’ Trump said, ‘Many times we made agreements with Russia, but Zelensky did not agree. It’s a very difficult balance.’
He said, ‘This is bloodshed, what is happening is terrible. Drones are killing thousands of people every week. We’ll have to stop this.’ Earlier, Zelensky had said that his envoys would try to finalize with US officials the documents of the proposed peace deal, which relate to post-war security guarantees and economic recovery.
