American space agency NASA gave interesting information by posting a video on social media platform X. In the video, Astronaut Christina Hammack Koch of Artemis 2 mission has made an interesting revelation. He called himself ‘Space Plumber’ and told that he was the one who fixed the malfunction in the toilet of the spacecraft.
NASA showed Christina in the video saying, ‘I am a space plumber and I am proud of it.’ Four astronauts have gone to the moon in Artemis 2 mission. During this time, there was a slight problem in the toilet of the spacecraft. Christina said, “Initially we thought that something was stuck in the motor, but later we found out that it was a small problem of ‘priming’. Now everything is fine and we are ready to move forward.”
The long-standing question has been how do toilets work in space? Scientists say that on Earth, garbage falls down due to gravity, but this is not possible due to the absence of gravity in space. That’s why the space agency’s Universal Waste Management System (UWMS) uses air flow. The strong flow of air pulls urine and feces away from the body and deposits it at the right place.
UWMS has been further improved for Artemis. In this, as soon as the lid is lifted, the air flow starts automatically, due to which the smell does not spread. This system is 65 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter than the first toilet. In smaller missions like Artemis 2, the waste is not treated with chemicals, but is collected for later disposal.
The toilet has been designed keeping in mind the suggestions of women astronauts. In this, a special shaped funnel and tube are used for urination, while a seat is used for defecation. Both can also be used together. The seat looks small and pointy, but in low gravity it sits snugly against the body, making everything fall into place.
NASA recycles about 90 percent of the liquid water on the space station, which also includes urine and sweat. UWMS integrates well with this recycling system, allowing more water to be reused.
