Jagdeep Dhankhar wrote a letter to President Draupadi Murmu on 21 July 2025 and announced his resignation. He wrote in his letter that he is taking these steps on the advice of doctors and giving priority to his health. According to his letter, “I resign from the post of Vice President of India to give priority to health care and to follow medical advice, as is a provision in Article 67 (A) of the Constitution.” He thanked President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and members of Parliament for the support received during the tenure. However, his letter did not give accurate information about his illness.

According to media reports, Jagdeep Dhankhar was admitted to AIIMS Hospital in Delhi on 9 March 2025 after complaining of sudden chest pain and restlessness. He was kept in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) and was treated under the supervision of senior cardiologist. At that time his condition was stated to be stable and on 12 March he was discharged. It is believed that his health was not fully recovered, because even after this his health continued to deteriorate.
Sources have revealed that Dhankhar had a serious heart related problem, which was undergoing treatment for a long time. Some reports also said that earlier this year he had to be hospitalized in Nainital. However, accurate information about his illness has not been made public yet. However, it is so clear that his health was so bad, due to which the doctors advised him to stay away from stress and relax.
