After winning the election in January, US President Donald Trump announced that he would first end Russia and Ukraine War. However, after winning the election, he had asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the war several times, but not a single meeting has been possible so far. Apart from this, Trump spoke to representatives of both countries at least 7 times in just 7 months after returning to power. These efforts were sometimes direct conversation and sometimes through mediators.
Trump’s method is pressure. He has given a clear warning to Russia that if there is no concrete progress in the peace talks till August 8, then America will impose heavy tariffs on Russia. In this way, both economic pressure and political dialogue have been held together. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has indicated that Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin may meet soon, but Trump has put a unique condition on this possible meeting. The condition is that Putin will first have to meet Ukraine President Volodimir Zelancesi.
Putin-Jalensky’s condition
Trump believes that Putin often talks about peace, but immediately after that he bombs Ukraine. His concern stems from old developments, when Russia continued military attacks during the talks. He clearly told Putin that the trump-Putin meeting will take place only when Putin first holds a face-to-face talks with Zelancesi. According to Trump, this step will only prevent talks from becoming a diplomatic photo session and will take it towards the real solution. According to the New York Post, a White House official said that the purpose of Trump’s strategy is to avoid the time -wasted meetings and the three leaders are brought on the same platform and make concrete plans for the end of the war.
Historical occasion or diplomatic challenge?
If this meeting takes place, it will be the first time after a complete attack on Russia’s Ukraine in 2022 that Putin and Zelancesi will sit in the same room. The former President who, from Biden to European leaders, has not been able to hold this level meeting so far. It can be a historical turn when there is a tripartite talks, which will not only be a step towards ending the war, but will also become an important example of global diplomacy. However, it also has several risks such as Russia’s terms, Ukraine’s sovereignty concerns and strategic priorities of Western countries. Nevertheless, Trump’s style suggests that they want to maintain the image of ‘deal maker’ even by taking risks. If this meeting is successful then it can become the biggest achievement of their second term.
