Former US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed strong concern over the policies of President Donald Trump at the ET World Leaders Forum on Friday (22 August 2025). He said that the great nation never shows greatness only by giving ultimatums, but also talks with cooperation and respect and find solutions. Kerry said that the recent conflict between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is very unfortunate.
Kerry, who was the Foreign Minister during the Barack Obama government, said that at that time there was respect and cooperation in the conversation, but now the round is filled with order, pressure and unilateral decisions. In recent times, Indo-US relations have been stressed due to Trump’s decisions. The Trump administration has fined India for buying Russian oil. Not recognizing India’s role during the struggle with Pakistan also caused controversy.
What did Kerry expect?
Kerry, however, hoped that India and America would resolve their trade disputes. Describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal as a friend, he said that zero tariffs on American imports are a major change in the offer made by India.
America’s experts warned Trump
Kerry is not alone, even before that many former American officials and experts have expressed concern over Trump’s India policy. Trump’s former ally John Bolton said that Trump’s policy is threatening decades -old American efforts, which aims to keep India away from Russia and China. Former US trade officer Christopher Padila warned that these fees could cause long-term damage to Indo-US relations and raise questions whether America is a reliable partner. American economist Jeffrey de Sachs described Trump’s fees as the most foolish strategic move of US foreign policy. According to him, the US brought BRICS countries closer overnight by imposing punitive fees on India.
