Six Indian-American members of the US Congress have strongly condemned the tearing of the Indian flag during an immigration-related protest outside Frisco City Hall in Texas. At the same time, he has also expressed solidarity with the Indian-American community amid growing concerns over xenophobia (hatred towards foreigners) and anti-India statements.
After a protestor tore an Indian flag during a protest with anti-India slogans and statements, representatives Raja Krishnamurthy, Ami Bera, Pramila Jayapal, Ro Khanna, Shri Thanedar and Suhas Subramaniam issued a joint statement. This incident attracted a lot of attention on social media and drew strong reactions from Indian-Americans across the US.
Lawmakers said, ‘We strongly support the constitutional right of all Americans to freedom of expression. Additionally, we condemn the tearing of the Indian flag along with anti-India hate speeches outside Frisco City Hall, as such actions promote anti-Indian violence and xenophobia. Acts of hatred and intimidation targeting any community are unacceptable and have no place in our country.
The statement further said, ‘The Indian-American community is an important part of our country and they have the right to feel safe and respected. When Indian-Americans and South Asian-Americans face harassment, xenophobia and hate speech, leaders must make it clear that the targeting of any community cannot be tolerated or condoned.
Members of Congress also reiterated their support for Indian-Americans in Texas and across the United States. He said, ‘We stand in solidarity with the Indian-American community in Frisco and across the country. Everyone has the right to live with dignity and security, without fear, harassment and discrimination.
These six MPs are the largest group of Indian-American members ever serving together in the US House of Representatives. Together they have often spoken on issues that impact immigrant communities, civil rights and the growing Indian-American population in America.

Today, Indian-Americans number more than 5 million and are one of the most educated and economically successful ethnic communities in the United States. The community has also steadily increased its political influence with its increasing participation in Congress, state legislatures, local governments, and senior positions in business and technology.
Frisco, located north of Dallas, has seen rapid population growth in the last two decades and a large number of Indian-Americans live here. The city has become an important hub for professionals working in technology, healthcare, finance and other sectors, reflecting the growing expansion of the Indian community in Texas and across the United States.
