In view of the increasing tension in the Middle East, on one hand the prices of petrol and diesel have increased by Rs 7.50 in the last 15 days. At the same time, now the prices of pulses are continuously increasing due to transportation and weather.
Why are the prices of pulses increasing?
- The prices of petrol and diesel have increased these days. Imports have become expensive even before crude oil becomes expensive. Now the increase in the price of petrol and diesel in the country is affecting the freight freight. Truck fares have increased significantly compared to before. Due to this, the cost of transporting pulses from mandis to grocery stores has increased.
- Due to unseasonal rains and El Nino, there has been huge damage to urad and tur or arhar crops in the major producing states of the country.
- Due to the strength of the dollar in the international markets and problems in the global supply chain, imports have also become expensive, hence the prices of pulses are increasing in the country.

Highest price of pigeon pea
At present, the prices of arhar dal are showing the highest rise in the wholesale market. Traders say that arhar dal has become costlier by 12 percent in the wholesale market and has reached the level of Rs 9000-12250 per quintal. Its average wholesale price in the mandis of Uttar Pradesh is around Rs 10440 per quintal. At the same time, in some other big mandis like Siliguri, the price has reached a maximum of Rs 11000 per quintal.
Why did the prices of pigeon pea rise the most?
To meet its needs, India imports arhar dal on a large scale from Myanmar and African countries. Due to tension in West Asia, sea freight has increased so much that arhar dal from abroad is becoming expensive by the time it reaches India.
