How Doctors Find Cause Of Death In Postmortem: Postmortem i.e. autopsy is not just a medical procedure, but it is considered the most important way to reach the real reason behind death. When a person dies suddenly, under suspicious or unusual circumstances, doctors closely examine every vital organ of the body. Through this investigation, it is understood how and what were the reasons for the death.
How do we know about death?
According to medical experts of the National Health Service, every organ of the body definitely gives some indication about the condition before death. For example, if blockage, swelling or blood clot is seen in the arteries of the heart, then there is a possibility of a heart attack. At the same time, signs like filling of lungs with water, infection or burning sensation can indicate respiratory arrest, poisonous gas or lung disease. Brain examination is also a very important part of postmortem. If bleeding, swelling or injury marks are found in the brain, then experts link it to stroke, head injury or some external attack. Similarly, the condition of liver and kidney can determine the presence of poison, drugs or long standing disease in the body.

Why does the report take time?
Actually, during postmortem, decisions are not taken just by looking at the eyes. Many times small samples of organs and tissues are taken and sent to the lab. There, disease, infection, poison or internal damage of the body is detected through microscope and chemical tests. This is the reason why in many cases it takes several weeks for the postmortem report to arrive. According to the standards of Britain’s Royal College of Pathologists and Human Tissue Authority, postmortem is done not only to know the cause of death, but also to understand the diseases better and make the treatment more effective in future.
Small checks are necessary
Experts say that even small marks on the body prove to be very important in the investigation. Signs like change in skin color, nails turning blue, injuries on the body or strangulation marks help in understanding the manner of death. Many times, by comparing the condition of internal organs and external injuries, it is decided whether the death was natural, an accident or related to some crime. After the postmortem, pathologists prepare a detailed report, which includes the probable cause of death, signs found inside the body and results of lab tests. This report later becomes the most important evidence in police investigation and legal process.
