14 months ago today, India had suspended the Indus Water Treaty to deal with Pakistani sponsored terrorism and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had clearly said that blood and water cannot flow together. In the last 14 months, Pakistan tried its best through many countries to convince India and get the Indus Water Treaty re-implemented. Not only this, the Shahbaz government also went to the so-called Court of Arbitration to put pressure on India, but India neither came under any pressure nor made any changes in the decision to postpone the Indus Water Agreement.
Now the Pakistani government is organizing a joint program with the help of a think tank in Brussels, the capital of the European country Belgium, on June 18, in which the issue of Indus Water Treaty will be raised and an attempt will be made to portray Pakistan as a victim that if India does not re-implement the Indus Water Treaty, then the people of Pakistan will die of hunger and thirst and the fields will become barren.
The event titled “Transboundary Water Resources: A Weaponized Global Common” is being jointly organized by the Belgian think tank Center for European Policy Studies (CEPS) and the Embassy of Pakistan to the EU, Belgium and Luxembourg. The recorded keynote address of Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dr. Ishaq Dar will be telecasted along with Pakistan’s Union Minister for Climate Change and Environment Coordination Dr. Musadiq Masood Malik. Will be involved, which makes it clear how worried and desperate Pakistan is after India postponed the Indus Water Agreement.
The program will be organized in two sessions
ABP News has a copy of the agenda of the event, according to which the conference will be inaugurated by CEPS Chief Executive Officer Karel Lanu and Pakistan’s Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg Rahim Hayat Qureshi. After this, the recorded address of Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dr. Ishaq Dar will be broadcast. According to the agenda, there are two sessions of the program.
Who will be included?
The first session will focus on Pakistan’s climate and water narrative and will be chaired by Dr. Isabelle Schechenbach, Climate Program Head, CEPS, and will include Sophie Deschmidt, Associate Director, ECDPM, and Dr. Musadiq Masood Malik, Pakistan’s Union Minister for Climate Change and Environment Coordination. In this session, due to the postponement of the Indus Water Treaty, Pakistan will try to highlight the problems related to floods, food security and water related areas of the low-lying areas in the country.
Pakistan’s propaganda on Indus Water Treaty
The Indus River Basin has been mentioned repeatedly in the agenda of the conference and an attempt has been made to present the water sharing dispute from the perspective of climate crisis, international law and regional security. The second session will focus directly on international water sharing arrangements and the legal and diplomatic arguments related to the Indus Waters Treaty, chaired by Dr. Seren Ergench, CEPS Research Fellow. Faisal Hussain Naqvi, former legal advisor to the Pakistan government in Indus Water Treaty matters, will also be included in the panel. Apart from this, senior researcher Kathy Suykens of Utrecht University and Danish Qayyum, notorious for continuously spreading anti-India propaganda and misleading narratives under the guise of journalism, will also be included.
The details of the conference talk about the frequent use of shared water resources as a weapon and the Indus Basin has been presented as a major disputed area, which clearly shows that Pakistan is trying to create an organized narrative at the international level regarding the Indus Water Treaty and wants to draw the attention of western countries towards this issue. However, if Pakistan had put in the same amount of effort and money to curb terrorist organizations in its country as it is investing in the international lobby after the postponement of the Indus Water Treaty, then Pakistan would not have needed to do all this.
