How To Protect Yourself From Heatwave: The havoc of heat is continuously increasing and in view of this, the Ministry of AYUSH has issued a public health advisory on May 18 regarding protection from extreme heat and heat wave. The ministry has advised people to drink as much water as possible, avoid strong afternoon sun, wear light cotton clothes and avoid dehydration. It has been said in the advisory that if symptoms like dizziness, headache, nausea, excessive increase in body temperature, fainting, seizures or change in mental status are seen, then it should not be ignored, because these can be signs of heat stroke.

Who should be most careful?

According to the Ministry of AYUSH, this advisory is especially important for the general public as well as children, pregnant women, elderly, laborers working outside and people suffering from chronic diseases like heart disease or high blood pressure. Emphasis has also been laid on providing shaded areas, rest breaks and continuous water supply in workplaces and public events.

What should be done to keep the body cool?

Traditional remedies related to Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani and Homeopathy have also been mentioned in the advisory. To keep the body cool, it has been advised to drink buttermilk, coconut water, lemon water and electrolyte beverages. Besides, traditional beverages like Nimbukaphal Panak, Amr Prapanak and Chincha Panak have also been said to be beneficial in summer. The ministry has advised to include cold natured items like cucumber, watermelon, melon, petha, tomato and lemon in the daily diet.

When can life go away?

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, excessive heat does not allow the body to cool down properly, which can lead to serious illnesses and even death. According to the organization, small children, the elderly and people suffering from chronic diseases are most at risk.

What is the way to keep the body hydrated?

According to experts, the most important thing to avoid heat stroke is to keep the body hydrated. One should drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if one does not feel thirsty. Caffeine and overly sweet beverages should be avoided, as they can increase water loss in the body. Coconut water, lemon water and electrolyte drinks help in maintaining essential minerals in the body.

Don’t leave the house for so many hours

Sunlight is considered most dangerous from 12 noon to 4 pm. During this time one should try to stay indoors. If it is necessary to go out, it is better to use an umbrella, hat and sunglasses. Light colored loose and cotton clothes help in keeping the body cool.

Pay attention to food items

Experts also advise to avoid eating too much fried and spicy food, because it increases heat in the body. If someone feels excessive sweating, dizziness, weakness or muscle cramps, he should immediately be taken to a cool place and given water. It is important to seek doctor’s help immediately if needed.
