Middle East Tensions: The peace agreement that has been announced between America and Iran after a fierce conflict that lasted for 108 days has brought relief to the whole world, but along with it it has also raised many big questions. While US President Donald Trump announced the deal on the occasion of his birthday, he called it a major diplomatic success, while Iran also confirmed its agreement on the draft agreement after long and difficult negotiations.
However, this agreement has not been officially signed yet and it is said to be finalized on June 19. Despite this, there is a strong discussion about this deal at the global level as to who was the real winner in this agreement – America or Iran.
If the terms and conditions of the agreement are analyzed, then in many ways Iran appears to be in a strong position in this deal. The biggest thing is that one of America’s main goals was regime change in Iran, which it could not achieve. Iran’s political system and leadership remained intact, which is considered its biggest victory amid this conflict. Apart from this, America used its advanced military power like B-2 bomber, but despite this it could not completely subdue Iran. Even after facing attacks for months, Iran maintained its strategic and military balance and reached the negotiating table on its own terms.
Iran in strong position
The role of the Strait of Hormuz was also very important in this entire conflict. Iran used it as its biggest strategic weapon and affected the global oil supply. The effect of this pressure was that America also had to soften its stance. Under the agreement, it has been decided that within 30 days the American naval blockade will be lifted and the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened. This will have a direct impact on the global energy market and may provide relief to the world struggling with the oil crisis.
Another important aspect is that the nuclear program for which America had started the war is still unresolved. No concrete decision has been taken on this issue in the agreement, rather it has been postponed for further talks. This means that Iran has not made any major agreement on its nuclear program immediately. Apart from this, it has also been agreed to release Iran’s frozen assets worth billions of dollars, which will prove to be a big economic relief for it. Removal of restrictions on export of oil and petrochemicals is also said to be a part of this deal.
US’s bet weakened
However, there are many challenges before this agreement. The biggest challenge is the silence of Benjamin Netanyahu and the situation in Israel. Israel has clearly indicated that it is not in favor of stopping its military operations, especially regarding action against Hezbollah in Lebanon. In such a situation, there is a fear that Israel’s strategy might derail this agreement. Apart from this, it is also not clear whether the Strait of Hormuz will remain toll-free forever or this arrangement will be implemented only for a limited time.
This agreement appears to be less of a complete deal and more of an initial framework, with many issues still incomplete. While on one hand America is presenting it as its diplomatic success, on the other hand the situation indicates that Iran has succeeded in getting many of its important conditions accepted. In the coming days, when this agreement will be signed and the full terms will be revealed, only then will it become clear who is the real winner. At present, it can definitely be said that this deal has definitely taken a big step towards cooling the fire of war, but the path to permanent peace is still full of challenges.
