Israel has claimed to have killed Hamas military commander Mohammad Odeh in an airstrike. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has described this action as a big blow to the Hamas army. According to Israeli officials, this operation was jointly carried out by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet. He told that Odeh was kept under strict surveillance for months and then he was targeted at the opportunity.
According to a Reuters report, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that Odeh had been the head of Hamas’s intelligence division and was involved in the cross-border attack of October 7, 2023. Importantly, Odeh was made the new chief of Al-Qassam Brigades only about a week ago.
According to the report, Odeh had recently taken command of the military wing of Hamas. Earlier, he had received this responsibility after the death of Izz al-Din al-Haddad. Hamas-backed sources in Gaza claim that along with Odeh, his wife and son were also killed in this attack. Israeli officials said Odeh was believed to have played a key role in planning and coordinating the October 7 attacks. According to the army, he was also leading operations of attacks on Israeli forces in the recent conflict.
The IDF and Shin Bet said in a joint statement that several buildings in Gaza City were targeted, which were being used as hideouts for Odeh and his associates.
The agencies described Odeh as one of the remaining top Hamas military commanders accused of planning and carrying out the October 7 attacks. He says his death is a major blow to Hamas, as it seriously damages the organization’s efforts to reorganize and strengthen its military capabilities.
