Samsung is the display supplier
Samsung’s subsidiary Samsung Display produces the OLED displays used in iPhones. It is different from Samsung Mobile, which makes smartphones. Since Apple is known for providing premium experience, it is also ready to spend more money for the latest display technology. This is why many times Samsung’s latest display technology becomes available for iPhone before its own mobiles.
Apple and Samsung have been together for a long time
Apple first used OLED panel in iPhone X launched in 2017. The display required for this model was prepared by Samsung. Apple said that the OLED panel was customized for the iPhone, due to which it was able to provide brilliant colors, better contrast ratio, wide color support. About three years later, with the iPhone 12 series, the company started providing OLED displays in each of its models. By then, LG and BOE had also started making Apple’s standard OLED panels. Apple also benefited from this. Its supply chain diversified and component costs also started reducing. For the first time, the company used LTPO OLED in iPhone 13 models, which supported 120 Hz refresh rate. Apple brought always-on functionality in the iPhone 14 Pro models. Now the company is considering using LTPO+ display panels made by Samsung in the iPhone 18 Pro models to be launched in September.
What is the advantage of LTPO+ display?
LTPO+ (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon Oxide Plus) displays are more power efficient and infrared cameras can also be placed under these panels. Another advantage of this will be that even after offering variable refresh rate (1-120Hz), it will consume less battery. This means that the iPhone will be able to offer great visuals even when using less power.
