Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 43 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 match here on Sunday due to the brilliant performance of the bowlers after the half-centuries of Tim David (70 not out), Devdutt Padikkal (50 runs).
This is the third consecutive defeat of CSK, whose captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and invited RCB to bat. Apart from David and Padikkal, RCB scored a huge score of 250 runs for three wickets with the help of captain Rajat Patidar’s unbeaten 48 runs and Phil Salt’s 46 runs.
Padikkal (29 balls, five fours, two sixes) and David (25 balls, three fours, eight sixes) displayed explosive hitting and thrashed CSK’s helpless bowlers.
Captain Patidar had one four and six sixes in his 19-ball innings. Facing 30 balls, Salt hit three fours and two sixes.
In reply, CSK team could not recover from the collapse of the top order and despite Sarfaraz Khan’s 50 runs, it was reduced to 207 runs in 19.4 overs. For that, apart from Sarfaraz, Prashant Veer scored 43 runs and Jamie Overton scored 37 runs.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the most successful bowler for RCB, taking three wickets for 41 runs in four overs. Jacob Duffy, Krunal Pandya and Abhinandan Singh took two wickets each. Suyyash Sharma got one wicket.
CSK had a very bad start, losing the wicket of captain Gaikwad (07) in the very first over, who was caught by Padikkal in the slips after touching the bat on Duffy’s ball. In this way, Gaikwad’s poor performance continued in the tournament.
Ayush Mhatre (01) and Sanju Samson reached the pavilion in the next two overs, now the score became 30 runs for three wickets. Sarfaraz (25 balls, eight fours, two sixes) played responsibly and completed his half-century. In the powerplay, the team’s score was 77 runs for three wickets.
But he became the victim of Pandya on the very next ball when wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma stumped him. Shivam Dubey came to the crease and hit a six as soon as he came. In the same seventh over, Pandya took his second wicket by dismissing Karthik Sharma (06) on a full length ball. Dubey also could not last long and after his dismissal all hope was lost.
Before this, the rain of runs was started by Padikkal who made two important partnerships. He made a partnership of 56 runs (37 balls) with Phil Salt (46 runs) for the second wicket and 58 runs in 21 balls with Captain Patidar for the third wicket.
These partnerships were very important for RCB after being invited to bat on Chinnaswamy’s pitch which was a bit slow.
Salt was more dominant during the second wicket partnership and this partnership helped the team recover from the early dismissal of Virat Kohli (28 runs). When Kohli was on the score of seven runs, Shivam Dubey dropped his catch on the ball of Khalil Ahmed.
Salt’s quick innings helped the home team reach 51 runs for one wicket in the powerplay. But Salt could not last long, he gave a simple catch to Ahmed in the deep off Dubey’s ball.
By this time Padikkal was on 18 runs, he hit two sixes and a four off Dubey’s ball. With this, RCB’s run rate crossed the 10 runs per over mark for the first time in this innings. He completed his second consecutive half-century this season by taking one run off the ball of Matt Henry. But then he got bowled while trying to play ‘reverse scoop’ on Jamie Overton’s ball.
But by then RCB had scored 62 runs between 11 and 15 overs. Patidar along with David further strengthened the foundation.
RCB’s score after 15 overs was 153 runs for three wickets. After this the team added 97 more runs in the last five overs. Along with this, he also took advantage of some bad bowling done by CSK bowlers in the last overs.
Patidar and David batted brilliantly and made an unbroken partnership of 99 runs in 36 balls for the fourth wicket. The ball kept flying to every corner of the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Patidar thrashed Khalil Ahmed severely. Patidar hit two sixes and a four in his fourth and last over. David contributed to this shower of runs by hitting three sixes off Noor Ahmed in the 17th over.
This Australian batsman hit four sixes on Overton in the 19th over, three of which were consecutive. In this way, the weaknesses of CSK’s bowling were once again exposed in front of a strong batting order.
