Can Red Chilli Relieve Diabetic Nerve Pain: Nerve pain is a common but very disturbing problem in diabetic patients. Many people feel burning, tingling, numbness or electric shock-like pain in their feet and hands. Now a new review has revealed that a special element found in red chilli can help in providing relief from such pain. Let us tell you about it in detail.

Is red chilli really beneficial?

Recently, a review published in the Journal of the Association of Physicians of India analyzed 22 clinical studies conducted on more than 1,800 patients. It was found that capsaicins derived from red pepper can provide relief from pain associated with pain, especially diabetic peripheral neuropathy and postherpetic neuralgia.

This review was led by Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman and Diabetes Expert, Dr. Mohan Diabetes Specialty Center, Chennai, Dr. Mangesh Tivaskar, Diabetologist, Shilpa Medical Research Center, Mumbai, Dr. Abhay Nene, Orthopedic Surgeon, Lilavati Hospital, and Dr. Sonali Gokhale, expert in medical matters and other experts.

How effective is red chilli?

According to experts, 0.075 percent capsaicin cream was found to be most effective. This is a topical cream that is applied on the skin. It contains controlled quantity of active ingredient of red chilli, which acts on the nerves causing pain. Dr. V Mohan says that it would not be right to consider capsaicin only as a part of pain relieving balm. According to him, it directly affects the fibers that transmit pain signals to the nerves. This is the reason why it is considered different from normal pain relief measures. He also said that 0.075 percent capsaicin formulation may prove to be more effective than products with lower quantity.

In which problems is it effective?

According to Dr. Mangesh Tiwaskar, the strongest scientific evidence is currently available for diabetic peripheral neuropathy and postherpetic neuralgia. However, nerve pain can also be caused by vitamin B deficiency, thyroid problems, excessive alcohol consumption, chemotherapy or other neurological diseases. Even in such cases, the possibility of getting relief at the local level cannot be ruled out. Experts say that neuropathic pain is often confused with normal pain, due to which proper treatment is not provided. Many people use simple pain relievers or balms, even though they do not affect the root cause of nerve pain.

What should we keep in mind?

According to Dr. Sonali Gokhale, this review suggests that 0.075 percent capsaicin cream can be considered a better option for patients who have trouble taking medicines for a long time or who want local treatment. However, experts also advise that instead of starting treatment for any type of nerve pain on your own, one should first seek proper examination and advice from a doctor.
