Russia has once again given a big statement regarding nuclear weapons. Amidst the increasing nuclear arms race between many countries, the Kremlin has said that only nuclear weapons can save the world from global war. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday (24 June 2026) that at this time nuclear weapons are the only means that can prevent the world from a major threat like the Third World War. Peskov said that the world’s security system is continuously weakening. According to him, today’s reality is that the world has no strong security option left except nuclear deterrence.
Dmitry Peskov also said that in the coming time, through new technologies, such non-nuclear weapons can also be made, whose destructive capacity can be equal to nuclear weapons. Although he did not name any specific country in his statement, in recent months Donald Trump has been raising concerns about China’s growing nuclear arsenal and Iran’s possible nuclear program.

Vladimir Putin mentioned nuclear weapons
Vladimir Putin has also mentioned nuclear weapons several times during the Ukraine war. America and European countries have repeatedly objected to such statements of Putin amid the war going on against Ukraine for more than 4 years. Western countries have been alleging that Russia is using nuclear weapons to create pressure. Meanwhile, Trump is advocating a new nuclear treaty, in which China has also been included, but China has publicly rejected this proposal. However, on this issue, Russia says that if China is included in any new treaty, then American allies like Britain and France will also have to be included in it.
What happened under the New START treaty?
Concern about control over nuclear weapons has also increased because the last major nuclear treaty between Russia and America, NST, ended in February this year. After the end of this treaty, many limitations imposed on the world’s two largest nuclear powers have been removed. Under the New START treaty signed in 2010, both Russia and the US were limited to 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads. This was one of the most important treaties on nuclear arms control after the Cold War, but both countries have been accusing each other of not following the agreement for a long time. Now, for the first time in decades, such a situation has arisen when there is no active treaty limiting the deployment of nuclear weapons between Russia and America. This is the reason why both concern and debate regarding nuclear weapons have intensified across the world.
