Middle East Conflict: Amidst the tension over Hormuz, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Türkiye are now looking for a different and alternative route. Since Iran’s blockade on Hormuz, countries of the world have had to face difficulties.
South China Morning Post released a report saying that the governments of Saudi Arabia, UAE and Turkey are working on land rail links, maritime corridors and pipeline projects. Its objective is to reduce our dependence on the routes passing through Hormuz and the Red Sea.
On February 28, after the joint action by America and Israel on Iran, a blockade was imposed on Hormuz. Due to which the world economy was deeply affected. Because this is the main waterway for energy supply to the world.
Experts said – this is a structural change
After this recently released news, experts are calling this step a structural change away from dependence on weak infrastructure in the Gulf region. These routes include movement of goods from UAE and Oman ports located outside the Persian Gulf. Through this, goods will now be transported to Jordan via Saudi Arabia. After this, from there it will be taken to the Mediterranean Sea via Egypt’s Suez Canal or Syrian ports.
Apart from this, some links are already operational. These include the sea-land corridor connecting UAE ports to Saudi Arabia’s ports, as well as Jordan’s rail service. This has been started this year. Apart from this, Saudi has also started a freight service from its Neom port. This Suez Canal connects to the Gulf countries and Iraq.
Here, parallel Saudi Arabia, UAE, Turkey and Jordan have started plans to restart the historic Hijaz Railway. This railway connects Jeddah to Istanbul via Amman and Damascus.
Agreement on developing regional railway network at GCC summit
At a recent GCC summit in Jeddah, leaders agreed to rapidly develop a regional railway network. This network will connect Saudi Arabia with UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain. Apart from this, discussions are also going on to build a multi-country network for oil and gas pipelines as well as power lines and water systems.
