Pfizer’s Berobenatide Weight Loss Drug: There is a possibility of a big change in the treatment of obesity and diabetes. Pharmaceutical company Pfizer has released the results of the mid-stage trial of its new experimental drug berobenetide. The special thing is that if this drug gets approval in the future, then it could be the world’s first GLP-1 based weight loss therapy which will have to be taken as an injection only once a month and not every week.
How is medicine given this way?
Currently, popular weight loss drugs like Vegovy and Zbound are given as weekly injections. In contrast, Brabantia aims to make treatment more convenient for patients. In the initial phase, patients will be given weekly doses, after which they will have to take only one injection in a month. This means that instead of 52 injections, only 12 injections will be required in a year.
In a clinical trial called Vesper-3, the weight of participants not suffering from diabetes reduced by 12.3 percent. Interestingly, the patients who later switched to monthly dosage continued to lose weight and the weight loss process did not come to a standstill.

Are their effects visible?
Although drugs like Vegovy and Zbound have shown weight loss results of about 15 percent and more than 20 percent in large and long-term studies, Dr. Anoop Mishra, Chairman, Fortis CDOC Hospital for Diabetes and Allied Sciences and former professor at AIIMS Delhi, says that the results of different trials should not be compared directly.
What is its specialty?
According to Dr. Anoop Mishra, the biggest feature of Berobanetide is not the percentage of weight loss, but its monthly dosing. He believes that in a country like India, continuing treatment for a long time is a big challenge. In such a situation, the convenience of taking injections only once a month can increase patients’ commitment to treatment and reduce the possibility of leaving treatment. According to experts, now the Phase-3 trials of this medicine will be monitored. In this, aspects like ability to maintain weight loss for a long time, safety, gastrointestinal side effects, effect on heart and kidney will be evaluated. It will also be seen that this medicine, which remains active in the body for the whole month, does not give rise to any new risk.
When can it come in the market?
Dr. Mishra believes that in future the focus of obesity treatment will not be limited to weight loss only. Factors like heart disease, kidney health, blood sugar control, cost of the medicine and the individual health condition of the patient will also play an important role in deciding the treatment. According to him, in the coming years, long-acting drugs, combination therapy and personalized treatment will decide the direction of obesity treatment. If it is successful in its final trials, it is likely to be available to patients by late 2028 or mid-2029. Experts believe that this drug can change the way obesity is managed as a long-term disease.
