US President Donald Trump’s praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recently held G-7 summit in Evian, France is being considered important for India-US relations. The US President had said that PM Modi looks calm and handsome, but when it comes to the country’s interests or trade deals, he proves to be a very tough negotiator. After returning back to America, Trump has once again given a big statement regarding PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
What did Trump say about Jinping and PM Modi?
In an interview given to Axios, Donald Trump once again described PM Modi as a very strong leader and said that he is one of the world leaders whom he likes the most. Regarding Chinese President Xi Jinping, he said that he is a busy leader. He described China’s President Jinping and India’s PM Modi as the global leaders whom he admires the most.
Trade deal expected to be finalized soon
PM Modi and Trump met on Wednesday (June 17, 2026) during the G7 summit in France, which was their first face-to-face conversation after 16 months. In this meeting, PM Modi raised many issues with Trump including the death of Indian sailors on the Oman coast, opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Minister Vikram Misri said that both the leaders directed their negotiators to finalize the proposed trade agreement as soon as possible. He said considerable progress has been made towards finalizing an interim trade agreement and US Trade Representative Jameson Greer will visit India next week to take the talks forward.
This comment of Trump has come at a time when there have been challenges in the relations between the two countries due to tariffs imposed on Indian exports, continued oil purchases from Russia and immigration related issues. However, both the countries are continuing talks on the trade deal.
