What did Rahul Gandhi say in Lok Sabha?
Rahul Gandhi was speaking on CJP movement and education system in the monsoon session 2026 of Lok Sabha on Wednesday. At the beginning of his speech, he said that he met ‘Lovely’, an 18 year old student who was involved in the CJP protest. Rahul quoted him as saying that there are three categories of students:
- Those students who have ‘open mind’ and ‘open heart’. They know the world is changing, knowledge changes and they don’t know every truth.
- Those students who are ‘arrogant’. They think they know everything, they don’t listen, they don’t understand the truth of others. Rahul said that when he asked Lovely what she called such students, she said, ‘I consider them idiots.’ Rahul told that Lovely further said that these ‘idiots’ do not listen to anyone and try to call themselves God.
- Rahul said that when he asked Lovely what is the third category, she said- ‘Blind devotee.’ That is, those people who consider ‘Idiot’ as God and follow him.
Rahul also said that students are actually angry because they are not allowed to express themselves, ask questions and follow their passion in India. He alleged that ‘RSS has taken over the education system.’ Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation is ‘sham’ because the Education Ministry is actually run by the RSS.
Apart from this, Rahul made serious allegations against Home Minister Amit Shah and said, ‘Home Minister ordered firing on students’ and gave permission to use ‘pellet guns’.
BJP’s uproar over the word ‘idiot’ and Speaker’s order
As soon as Rahul used the words ‘idiot’ and ‘blind devotee’, the members of the treasury bench started creating a ruckus. BJP MPs said that Rahul is using unparliamentary words and in the name of a student, he is saying such words which are against the dignity of the House. He demanded that these words be removed from the proceedings.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla immediately intervened and said, ‘The word which is unparliamentary will be removed.’ He told Rahul not to use such words.
On this Rahul said, ‘Instead of the word idiot, I will give another word’. But the speaker clearly said, ‘There is no need for you to give arrangements for this, I have already given arrangements.’ That is, the Speaker had already declared the word ‘idiot’ unparliamentary and ordered to remove it from the proceedings.
What is the rule of unparliamentary words in Lok Sabha?
According to Rule 380 of the Lok Sabha, if the Speaker feels that the words or remarks spoken by a member are defamatory, indecent, unparliamentary or against the dignity of the House. The Speaker of the Lok Sabha can order him to withdraw from the proceedings of the House.
According to Rule 381, the words or remarks expunged from the proceedings are shown in the record with a beep and ‘Expunged as ordered by the Chair’ is written below it. Whether a word will be considered unparliamentary or not is decided by the Speaker considering the meaning and circumstances of that word. In this case, Speaker Birla considered the word ‘idiot’ as unparliamentary.
Fierce debate between Rijiju and Rahul on the allegation of ‘shooting at students’
Rahul Gandhi also said in his speech that ‘Home Minister ordered firing on students’ and gave permission to use ‘pellet guns’. This allegation was so serious that Union Minister Kiren Rijiju immediately stood up and hit back at Rahul.
Rijiju said, ‘You are speaking without thinking. Don’t say that. You should speak seriously. This is not right. On what basis did you make this statement? Who told you? You apologize. A bullet was fired, this is not a small matter. How can it be said that someone fired a bullet? This is a serious allegation.
Rahul remained adamant on his point and said that if the Home Minister has not given any order, then he should come to the House and clarify that he has not given any such instruction.
On this the opposition MPs started shouting slogans and raised slogans like ‘Let Rahul Gandhi speak, let Rahul Gandhi speak’.
Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav said, ‘If the Leader of Opposition has made serious allegations, then it is the responsibility of the government to investigate those who behave like this against students.’ But Rijiju clearly said, ‘You demand an investigation, but Rahul Gandhi is directly blaming the Home Minister. Speaking to the media in the Parliament complex after his speech, Rahul Gandhi targeted Home Minister Amit Shah and said, ‘Home Minister Shah did not come to the House, whereas he should have responded to the police action on students. If the Home Minister has not given any order, then he should come to the House and clarify that he has not given any such instruction. The biggest thing is that I have the right to speak in Parliament and I should get that right.
Rahul also said, ‘Students are actually angry because they are not allowed to be students in India, follow their passion, express themselves and ask the questions of their mind. They have to accept the absurd history that the RSS imagines.
Speaker Birla’s stance: Trying to balance
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla tried to strike a balance in the entire matter. He ordered Rahul’s ‘idiot’ word to be removed from the proceedings, calling it unparliamentary, but also gave Rahul an opportunity to speak.
Birla said that he wants to maintain the dignity of the House and no member should use such words which are unparliamentary. He also said that if any member violates the decorum of the House, he will take strict action. However, neither BJP nor the opposition was completely satisfied with this decision of Birla.
BJP wanted Rahul to be forced to apologise, while the opposition said that the Speaker should allow Rahul to speak without any interruption.

The video of Rahul’s statement has become increasingly viral on social media. Hashtags like RahulGandhi, Idiot, BlindBhakt and CJPProtest are trending. While BJP supporters are targeting Rahul for making ‘unparliamentary’ and ‘irresponsible’ statements, Congress and opposition supporters are calling his statements as ‘truth’.
Some social media users say that Rahul did the right thing by raising the issue of the students of CJP movement in the House, but he should not have used the word ‘idiot’. At the same time, some users say that the word ‘Andhabhakta’ is fine because it questions the system, but the word ‘Idiot’ was unparliamentary.
