Delhi-based Jawaharlal Nehru University i.e. JNU has decided to change its hostel rules and implement a new system for married PhD students. According to the draft hostel manual issued by the university administration, now married research scholars will have to bear more expenses than before for staying in the hostel. Along with this, new rules have also been implemented regarding hostel allocation and duration of stay.
Now the amount of security deposit has been increased for married research scholars in Mahanadi Hostel of JNU. According to the new system, students will have to deposit refundable security. Apart from this, room rent, electricity-water charges and other facilities will be charged separately. The university administration says that this decision has been taken in view of the increasing facilities and maintenance costs.
Rent may increase every year
According to the new hostel policy, room rent and other charges may be increased from time to time. It has been said that the university will decide the fees based on the actual expenses incurred in running the hostel. In such a situation, students may have to pay more fees in the coming years.
Hostel facility will be available only for four years
JNU administration has also fixed the time limit for staying in the hostel. Under the new rules, PhD students will be allowed to stay in the hostel only for a maximum of four years from the date of admission. After this, the students will have to vacate the hostel. The university says that with this new students will also be able to get hostel facilities.
Priority for pregnant and women with children
In the draft rules, a provision has been made to give priority in hostel allotment to pregnant researchers and women taking care of small children. The university administration believes that this will facilitate female researchers to continue their studies.

New rules will apply to foreign students also
JNU has made it clear that these rules related to hostels will apply not only to Indian students but also to foreign students. All students will also have to give an affidavit regarding following the rules before hostel allotment.
Rules became stricter due to limited seats
The number of hostel seats in the university is limited even though a large number of students apply every year. That is why the administration has made the hostel allotment process more stringent. According to JNU, hostel facility will be made available only to eligible students and the allotment will be strictly based on the prescribed rules.
