The politics of Bengal has heated up after party supremo Mamata Banerjee allegedly slapped a person during a rally of Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Kolkata. BJP fiercely targeted Mamata Banerjee. BJP leader Keya Ghosh has called Mamata Banerjee desperate.

BJP leader Keya Ghosh, while talking to news agency PTI, said that she (Mamata Banerjee) is a very senior leader, but it seems that she is very frustrated. TMC is the same party for which 2.6 crore people of Bengal voted in the assembly elections held a month ago. We had received 41 percent support in the elections from the people of Bengal. If you look at it this way, it is equal to half the population of Denmark.

He said, ‘Now the question is how many people have separated themselves from the party since then (since the elections), apart from 20 MPs, 65 MLAs, let’s say 10 mayors and some 100 other people are included. That means in total about 200-250 people have resigned from the party and separated themselves.

No amount of money can buy me – Moitra

TMC MP Mahua Moitra further said, ‘Those who left TMC have joined BJP either out of greed for money, or out of fear of the stick, but they cannot buy me by paying any amount of money. You can either survive or sell. You cut my head, I will sacrifice myself, but I will not join BJP.

After the defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections, three Rajya Sabha MPs of Trinamool Congress had resigned. The Election Commission has announced elections on these seats. Voting on these three seats will be held on July 24.

According to ECI, voting on these seats will be held on July 24 from 9 am to 4 pm and counting of votes will be done on the same day at 5 pm. As per the election schedule, notification will be issued on July 7, while the last date for filing nominations has been fixed as July 14. Nomination papers will be scrutinized on 15th July and candidates will be able to withdraw their names till 17th July. The election process will be completed by July 27.

What is the mathematics of Rajya Sabha seats in Bengal?

In West Bengal, BJP has 207 assembly seats, Trinamool Congress has 80, Congress, Humayun Kabir’s party has two and CPI-AISF have one seat each. TMC is divided into two factions, in such a situation there is every possibility that BJP will easily win all these three seats, after which NDA’s figure in Rajya Sabha will increase to 155.

Shukhendu government was the first to resign

Sukhendu Shekhar Roy, considered close to Mamata Banerjee, was the first Rajya Sabha MP who resigned from the membership of TMC and Parliament on June 8. He had raised questions on corruption in TMC, violence against women and the leadership of Mamata Banerjee. Not only this, in his resignation letter he had mentioned the incident at RG Kar Medical College. His allegation was that the workers who worked hard in the party were sidelined and the tainted ones were promoted.

Former West Bengal minister Chandrima Bhattacharya has broken her silence after resigning from all the posts of Trinamool Congress (TMC). He said that party chief Mamata Banerjee questioned his honesty and loyalty, which hurt him deeply. Chandrima says that when there was no trust in her, there was no point in continuing at the top post of the party.

‘You yourself handed over the party office to him’, hurt by Mamata’s allegation

But now when my same loyalty was questioned and I was held responsible for the capture of the party office by the rebel group on Friday, I was left with no other option but to resign from all posts.

‘I can tell much more, but I will honor the oath’

Chandrima also said that she can tell many more things regarding the functioning of the government, but being a former minister, she will not do so while respecting the oath of secrecy.

Chandrima Bhattacharya’s resignation is being considered a big sign of increasing internal strife in TMC. She has made it clear that the biggest reason for leaving the party was that Mamata Banerjee questioned her loyalty and honesty, which she could not tolerate.

A question mark was raised on the political future of TMC in Kolkata when there was a split in the party after the defeat in the assembly elections. After the meeting held at Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence, Mahua said while talking to the media that the BJP government wants to weaken the Trinamool Congress at the grassroots level. Mahua Moitra recalled that in 2014, when she was supposed to get the Lok Sabha ticket, but due to some reason could not get it, I cried a lot throughout the night, only Shubhendu Adhikari supported me. TMC MP said, ‘Shubhendu told me – No sister, I am here. These are all emotional connections. Today we are in a different party. There is no discussion, this is a different matter.

Subhendu Adhikari, who was close to Mamata Banerjee, was one of the prominent leaders of TMC. He left TMC and joined BJP before the 2021 assembly elections and after BJP’s bumper victory in 2026, he has become the head of the state.

Mahua contested its first election in 2016

Mahua had first contested the assembly elections in 2016 from Karimpur seat. At that time Subhendu Adhikari used to be the supervisor of TMC of Nadia district. In 2019, she got the Lok Sabha ticket from Krishnanagar seat and came to Delhi as an MP. After that in 2024 also he won the election from Krishnanagar.

Calcutta High Court has sent a notice to former West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee in the case of contempt of court. This notice is in relation to the annual Martyrs’ Day rally of Trinamool Congress (TMC), which was called on 21 July 2025. This rally had violated the 2018 decision of the Calcutta High Court, which had given clear instructions to all political parties not to block any road in the city.

Recently, a contempt petition was filed in the Calcutta High Court regarding the annual Martyrs’ Day. This petition has been filed before the division bench headed by Justice Arijit Banerjee. A preliminary hearing in this regard was held on Friday (June 19, 2026). After this, the division bench ordered that contempt notices would be issued to Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. The next hearing of the case will be on July 3.

Let us tell you that in 2018, the division bench of Calcutta High Court had ruled that no political party will block the main parts of the city. This decision was given by Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya and Justice Arijit Banerjee.

The then division bench had said in its decision that a part of the road should always remain open for pedestrians and drivers. A part of the road should always be open in case of emergency including ambulance. Apart from this, if necessary, another road should be arranged for easy movement of vehicles.

In 2018, the High Court had ordered the police to inform people about traffic diversion through the media. Apart from this, the court had also said that if any situation of vandalism or violence arises during a political meeting or rally, then strict legal action will be taken against the accused.

Recently, a second petition has been filed in the Calcutta High Court, in which it has been claimed that the decision of 2018 has been violated during the Martyr’s Day rally of Trinamool Congress on July 21 last year. The petition also claimed that TMC’s ‘Martyrs’ Day’ rally was held at Esplanade in Central Kolkata by completely blocking an important junction, causing immense inconvenience to the general public.
