G-7 Summit is an international forum, where every year the leaders of its member countries come together on one platform. The member countries of G7 are France, America, UK, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada. Along with this, European Union is also a part of this meeting. Leaders attending the G7 meeting share their views on fundamental values. Exchange views on issues like freedom, democracy and human rights.
International challenges facing the world community are also discussed in this meeting. Such as global economy and regional issues. Along with this, a document of the outcome of this meeting is also issued. In the 70s, developed countries faced many challenges, such as the issue of the first oil crisis of 1973. At that time, a need was felt that policy discussion and coordination should be established at the level of leaders on issues of need like economy, trade, currency, energy.
The G7 summit was first held in Paris in 1975. At that time 6 countries had participated. France, America, UK, Germany, Japan and Italy. Since then it is organized every year. France has the presidency of G7 in the year 2026. America will preside over the G7 in the year 2027. India has been continuously participating in the G7 conference for the last several years.
Where is the summit taking place this time?
G7 member countries have been inviting India as an important partner. This year G7 is being organized in the beautiful city of Evian in France. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the G7 summit on 16-17 June. US President Trump will also be present in this conference. After France, the presidency has to go to America.
However, the specialty of G7 is that it has no formal legal existence nor does it have a permanent secretariat. Its only principle is that every year one of the 7 member countries is presiding over it. This system is also called Rotating Presidency. The biggest strength of the G7 is its small size and the relationship of mutual trust developed over years between the member countries. It is a different matter that these countries seem to disagree with each other on many issues, but when the G7 leaders talk to each other, they are seen communicating openly and directly.
What is the relationship between the G7 and G20?
Both the G7 and G20 have much in common in name and functionality. The G20 was formed after the global financial crisis in 2008. Which includes India, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, UK and America. Apart from this, European Union is also its member. The African Union was also given permanent membership in the G20 headed by India in the year 2024.
