What is the name of Sonam Wangchuk’s school?
The name of Sonam Wangchuk’s education institute is SECMOL (Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh). It is situated in Phey village of Ladakh. It was started in 1988 by some college students of Ladakh, including Sonam Wangchuk. This institute imparts education in a completely different way from traditional schools and gives more emphasis on practical learning.
What is taught here?
In SECMOL, studies are not based only on books like in normal schools. Here students are taught many things related to practical science, understanding of social issues, public speaking, gardening, care of animals and trees, Ladakhi culture, folklore and traditional activities. The objective here is not just to pass the examination but also to develop life related skills and social responsibility in the students.
What is special about the school?
The campus of this institute is spread over about 20 acres and the entire campus runs on solar energy. Here the students themselves handle many responsibilities of the campus. Along with studies, they are given different tasks every day.

How to get admission here?
According to the school’s website, students who have failed, dropped out or have a gap of a few years in studies after passing 10th can take admission here. However, the applying student is required to know Ladakhi language. Special priority is also given to applicants like disabled students, orphan children and children of single mothers. Sponsorship facility is also provided for needy students.
How much does education cost?
No tuition fees are charged for studying at SECMOL. Students are charged Rs 2,000 every month just for food. Apart from this, accommodation, education and other facilities are provided free of cost. In return, students have to actively participate in the daily tasks and responsibilities of the campus.
